The transformation of classroom into 'real world' requires not only physical resources such as textbooks, exercise books, maps, globes and an ongoing emphasis on incorporating technology into the classroom via everyday computer usage, presentations, smartboards, and other digital devices; it also requires very important abstract resources such as imagination, vision, and passion. These are all encouraged under the careful supervision of our nurturing staff. We believe that, together, these components are essential for a student's success in advancement of knowledge and development.
Private Schools and their curriculum, like the world, must evolve in order to ensure they become one of the leading Private Educational Institutions. Our Private School is committed to remaining current and preparing its students to participate fully and effectively in today's society. That being said, it is our mission to ensure that the traditional core knowledge and the educational philosophy at the preschool and elementary levels has been, and will continue to be, consistent over time. Our task of bringing the outside world, its challenges, and its realities, into the classroom is one that will allow students to understand the dynamics of any situation or environment they may encounter. This entire process is what we call practical life teaching.
Mathematics
Our students are given a solid foundation of core mathematical concepts to assist their understanding of more complex questions. Expectations for pencil and paper skills in mathematical operations are very high. Students are taught to describe what they are doing in mathematics and to explain why they are doing it. They are also able to identify the relationships between mathematical concepts and everyday situations and to make connections between mathematics and other subjects.
Engineering
Engineering and Robotics is an important part of the RHMS curriculum as it sparks student interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) subjects. Formed into teams, students are able to problem solve, be independent thinkers, be effective team members, and learn how to communicate well with their peers. In the spring of each year, RHMS students attend the Canadian First Robotics Competition Event which takes place at one of the nation’s elite engineering institutions.
French
Learning our country’s second official language will not only enhance a student’s overall skills in learning, but can also expand his/her career opportunities and create bilingual citizens of our children. Beginning in grade four and continuing until grade eight, our students begin with simple words that eventually grow into complete and complex conversations.
Health
Our Health program develops self-awareness and a detailed knowledge of nutrition, how to protect and take care of the human body, and how to exercise and live a balanced lifestyle. Staff and parents work together to help students develop attitudes and skills for healthy eating. By creating a supportive environment and encouraging our students to make informed choices, we help them establish patterns for healthy living they’ll carry into adulthood.
Social Studies
The Social Studies curriculum is designed to give our students a solid knowledge of geography; an appreciation of the past through the study of history, helping them develop an understanding of the present; and how to apply this knowledge to daily life. This increased understanding of environments and worldly traditions will help students develop an increased respect for the contributions of all cultures that have built not only this mosaic we call Canada but also the world as a whole.
Visual Art
At RHMS, we provide a well-rounded education in fine arts. Through the study of art, students are taken on a journey of discovery, development, and a quest for creativity. Beginning with the basic principles of art theory and technique, we complement their newfound knowledge with the study of Art History. In addition, students will also have access to digital tools like Photoshop and several video editing applications. At RHMS, we provide a well-rounded education in fine arts.
Computers
Today’s child is more engaged with technology than ever before. At RHMS, Science and Computer Studies go hand-in-hand. Students become digital creators, not merely digital consumers. Our STEM curriculum bridges the gap between students’ technological experiences and their understanding of how technology is made, and its functional use and purpose in the future.
Physical Education
Our program fosters an environment where students can learn the skills, techniques, and rules of a broad range of sports such as ball hockey, badminton, volleyball, and basketball, among others. Our students build strength, endurance, flexibility, balance and co-ordination, and develop confidence, creative expression, freedom of movement, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work as a team to reach a common goal.
STEM
The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) program is a meaningful cross-curricular platform, which guides student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking with real world applications. An enriched focus of the Technology and Mathematics component is to introduce Coding Languages that will provide students with not only theoretical, but practical hands-on knowledge, preparing them for their transition into the secondary level of education and beyond
Dramatic Arts
Our Drama program is designed to encourage, develop, and strengthen the self-confidence and caring nature of our students. To speak, perform, or stand in front of an audience and/or peers takes incredible courage. With the support and encouragement of friends and teachers, this is possible. Each year, our student body at RHMS dedicates hours of hard work to our large-scale productions in which each student takes on a unique role.
Language
While computers are an educational tool used by our students, we at RHMS still believe in the basic understanding and comprehension of the English language. Our Language program equips students with the literacy skills required to communicate in all fashions, whether writing a letter or an essay, or communicating with others in everyday English.
Music
Learning a musical instrument is a very rewarding and challenging aspect of our Music program. Students learn various instruments from Grades 3 to 8, and eventually perform original compositions on an instrument of their choice. Our band and choirs are excellent opportunities for children to learn melodic harmony and compete in various music competitions. In addition to providing an exceptional Music program, our school undertakes several large musical productions.
Athletic Teams
The RHMS Eagles have been an active member of the Small Schools Athletic Federation (SSAF) since 2003. We take pride in our ability to compete at a high level in all sports. At the same time, aside from our Championship accomplishments, we are also proud of our student athletes’ ability to demonstrate good sportsmanship both on and off the field of play.
